03 / IN DEPTH
Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) is a system of Vedic astrology developed by Prof. K. S. Krishnamurti in the mid-twentieth century. It refines traditional Parashari methods to make event prediction and timing more precise.
KP divides each of the 27 nakshatras into nine unequal parts in the proportion of the Vimshottari Dasha years. Each part is ruled by a sub-lord, giving 249 subdivisions of the zodiac. A planet or cusp is read through its sign lord, star lord and sub-lord, and KP gives the sub-lord the deciding role.
KP traditionally uses Placidus house cusps rather than equal houses. To judge a matter, the astrologer looks at the sub-lord of the relevant cusp and at the significators: the planets connected to a house through occupation, ownership and their star lords. The four-step method grades these connections from strongest to weakest.
For a specific question, the querent chooses a number from 1 to 249. The number fixes the ascendant through its sub-division, and the chart is judged with the same sub-lord and significator rules. KP Horary is widely used when birth details are unavailable or unreliable.
KP practitioners also check the ruling planets at the moment of judgement, such as the lords of the ascendant, the Moon’s sign and star, and the weekday, to confirm or narrow down timing.
